Fair Isle (Deborah Fruchter), Intarsia (Karen Fogle), Two color Slip-Stitch (Kate Brehe).

Note on the Fair Isle break out session: Deborah suggests the following (not included in the newsletter): cast on 80 stitches and knit 4 ridges of garter stitch in the round plus one inch of stockinette - you'll need to bring that and two more contrasting colors - Stick with a nice worsted or DK weight and a needle size you feel comfortable with - something a little “sticky” may help since we'll be covering some new techniques!

You can now pay your dues with PayPal (a small convenience fee will apply). See the PayPal link on our forms page

2011 KIESEWETTER 12K CAPS FOR KIDS CHALLENGE

Have you ever thought about running a 5K but didn't really want to run (or even walk!)? Let's knit a 12K (your goal: knit 12 "Kaps" in 12 months) in honor of long-time Guild member and Hats for Kids co-chairman Betty Kiesewetter. Sally Ortiz and Candy Grastorf are challenging each guild member to knit a 12K in honor of Betty.  Knit a "Kap" for Kids each month of 2011.  After 12 months if 100 members knit 12 caps, we'll meet our goal of 1,200 caps!  If 200 of us knit 12 caps that is 2,400!  Reola Boyd had encouraged us to each knit a hat (such as Betty's chevron hat) and bring it to the January meeting in honor of Betty.  We're going to keep up that encouragement in 2011 and have some fun while we're at it! Turn them in monthly or all at once by the October meeting. Be sure to note how many hats you turn in on the sign-in sheets so we can keep track. The hats will then be packaged and distributed in November to local charities selected by Guild members.

CLARIFICATION: Hats can be turned in until December 17 to count for the challenge.

Knit 12 hats in 12 months and receive an official certificate "I completed the Kiesewetter 12K!".  Astound your friends and have a chance to win fabulous prizes!  Stay tuned to future newsletters for updates! Update: For every 12 hats knit, get a chance at winning a wonderful prize!

January's suggestion is the Chevron Stripe Hat, found on page 12 of the GSLKG pattern book.

February's hat is the Twisted Column Rib variation on the basic hat.    OOPS! If you downloaded the pattern before February 3, please note that the version here is now correct. Note that the version on the members' page was fine all along. Thanks for your understanding...

March's suggested hat is the Bulky Yarn Hat in Garter Stitch.

In April, why not try the Beehive Hat?

May brings flowers, and this year the Tongue & Groove Horizontal Hat as well!

The suggested hat for June is the Checkered Basket Stitch hat.

July is hot - but this pattern's got ventilation: Basic Hat Pattern

In August, why not consider knitting #11, from the guild pattern book? Here's the same pattern, this time in blue.

Tip of the hat (pun intended) to August presenter, Kate Brehe - September's hat is the tricolor stripe hat.

In October, try your hand at cables. Knit Another Cable Hat.

The weather's cooling down - how about knitting November's pattern, a US Navy Watchman's Cap, to keep someone's head warm?

December features a challenge for the preemies: Click here for patterns. Hopefully, you can bring them to the Founders Day Luncheon on December 17 (as it happens - also the last day to submit hats for the 2011 K12K challenge).

Final results:

from Joan:

Back in January 2011 when members were asked to knit 12 hats in honor of long-time Guild member and Hats for Kids Co-chairman, Betty Kiesewetter, I had hoped to receive 1,200 hats by the end of 2011. (The original logo designed by Amanda Yancey was only designed to go that far.)  As the year went by I not only received more hats than expected, but I heard many compliments about my

mother Betty and realized how much everyone cared for her and that she was the reason everyone had responded so generously in making the hats – not the contest. Thank you to everyone for sharing their memories of my mom and keeping her sprit alive.

For information on charities served and list of winners, please see January newsletter.

KNITTING FOR BABIES IN HAITI

GSLKG Member, Sister Mary Crivello, in Taylorville, IL, asks members who are interested to knit, crochet or sew 42" x 52" crib covers for babies in Haiti.  Member Jane Bauer and her Needle Talk Group here in St. Louis will be making crib covers and Jane offered to collect any crib covers we make and get them delivered to St Peter & Paul's Church in Alton, IL.  Father Michel there will forward them on when there are enough to send.

Baby buntings are also very welcome. Guild members have suggested the following sites for pattern ideas (click on the title to get to the web page):

     Butterfly Baby Wrap

     Baby Burrito

     KasCuddle

     Button-Up Baby Wrap

     Baby Cocoon

Member Mary Birong has also suggested the KasCuddle Cuddle Sleep Sack - pattern here.

Click here and here if you'd like to read more about the project. Keep in mind that even in a southern climate, babies need to stay warm!

If you have any questions, please contact Jane Bauer at (314) 849-0818.
